Webinar-based continuing medical education in otorhinolaryngology during the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany: a longitudinal study
Conclusions Although the pandemic context likely influenced the results, we conclude that periodic ear, nose and throat webinar training during COVID-19 in 2020 was an effective alternative delivery method. We found high attention rates, high levels of participant satisfaction and low costs. Evaluations and re-evaluations will be necessary to adapt teaching concepts successfully and ensure high levels of teaching and learning efficiency.

Undergraduate education in palliative medicine in Germany: a longitudinal perspective on curricular and infrastructural development
Conclusions: Until now, teaching conditions and structures in palliative medicine in Germany have proven to be extraordinarily heterogeneous. Although professorships (“Chairs”) in palliative medicine proved to be particularly beneficial and supportive in curricular and structural development, only a minority of faculties provide leading academic positions in palliative medicine.

Undergraduate medical education amid COVID-19: a qualitative analysis of enablers and barriers to acquiring competencies in distant learning using focus groups
Med Educ Online. 2021 Dec;26(1):1940765. doi: 10.1080/10872981.2021.1940765.ABSTRACTDue to comprehensive social distancing measures related to the COVID-19 pandemic, medical faculties worldwide have made a virtue of necessity in resorting to online teaching. Medical faculties grapple with how to convey clinical competencies to students in this context. There is a need for research not only to map but also to explain the effect of these secondary measures on students' learning and mental wellbeing. During a period of ongoing comprehensive social distancing measures in Germany, we translated a competency-based curriculum inc...

Quality instead of quantity improves medical education.
Abstract Currently, continuing medical evaluation takes place in Germany-but not nationally or regularly, and without national standards. Therefore, comparisons between different clinics and trainers can currently not be drawn. Survey modes, such as those that have existed in Switzerland for decades, could provide a constructive basis in the assessment of the current continuing medical education of urology residents and subsequently facilitate the discussion on improvements. This requires constructive cooperation of all involved, without attributing the responsibility only to the educators. Models of rewarding go...

Accreditation systems for Postgraduate Medical Education: a comparison of five countries
AbstractThere is a widespread consensus about the need for accreditation systems for evaluating post-graduate medical education programs, but accreditation systems differ substantially across countries. A cross-country comparison of accreditation systems could provide valuable input into policy development processes. We reviewed the accreditation systems of five countries: The United States, Canada, The United Kingdom, Germany and Israel. We used three information sources: a literature review, an online search for published information and applications to some accreditation authorities. We used template analysis for coding...

A comparison of medical education in Germany and the United States: from applying to medical school to the beginnings of residency.
Authors: Zavlin D, Jubbal KT, Noé JG, Gansbacher B Abstract Both Germany and the United States of America have a long tradition of science and medical excellence reaching back as far as the nineteenth century. The same tribute must be paid to the medical educational system in both countries. Despite significant initial similarities and cross-inspiration, the paths from enrolling in a medical university to graduating as a medical doctor in Germany and the US seem to have become much different. To fill a void in literature, the authors' objective therefore is to delineate both structures of medical education in an u...

Digital medical education and students ’ mental health: effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany
This study aims to examine the consequent changes in medical school curricula alongside students’ mental and physical health. It is observed that 549 medical students (response rate: 79.7%) from 31 of 37 public medical schools in Germany completed a cross-sectional online survey. Students answered questions regarding teaching, internet use, COVID-19 and well-being. A multivariate logistic regression examined factors associated with depressed mood, insomnia and headache. Academic teaching moved to a virtual environment (91%), whilst practical activities were suspended or cancelled (88%). Virtual teaching modality, q...
